In the early 1990 Japanese textile designers led the way in combining traditional craft techniques with new technologies. Designers like Junichi Arai and Reiko Sudo were heat treating polyester to create Shibori-inspired three dimensional surfaces as well as using scraps of fabric with solvent, with the latter then dissolved to leave a fabric that was somewhere between patchwork and lace.
