Our look at materials this month is wide-ranging and multidisciplinary. We include a tich and vsually compelling collection of material explorations and research; a cultural building in Japan by a disciple of Louis Kahn, whose own use of concrete nearly rivals the master; a group of award-winning immigrant designers stretching the boundaries of their crafts; an exhibition on the product design of Grimshaw Architects, done at nearly all scales; and a look at how the tech world’s leading interior design firm uses materials to handle the problem of noise inb the open-plan office. These stories not only reveal the processes behind these projects, but also the vital role materials play in connecting design to both its comunity and the people who use it.
